The name of this Commune of the Canton of Sourdeval seems to come from wortus Mons, the uncultivated and stony mountains.

The first mention of the parish appears in 1082, when the Count Robert de Mortain gave half of it to the Dean of the College of St. Evrault de Mortain. It now belongs to the department of La Manche. The underlying ground is granite and the commune has an important history of producing granite of excellent quality.  Nearby there is a Granite museum.
